Humble beginnings and a bright future
The Karilagán Philippine Cultural Group, Inc. is a nonprofit, tax exempt 501 (c) 3 educational and cultural organization
chartered to the State of Texas. We began in 1993, when a small group of Filipino women in San Antonio decided to form a
dance group as a means of getting together while at the same time preserving and promoting Asian culture and heritage,
especially that of the Philippines. Since then, Karilagán has successfully evolved into a well-managed, all-volunteer
organization headed by a board of directors.
Among the main purposes and objectives of Karilagán, the group is providing
educational scholarships and cultural training workshops to Filipino-American non-students and students enrolled in different
schools and colleges.
Upon invitation, we give presentations for charitable organizations and special private functions, Asian Festival, King William Fair, and Asian Pacific Heritage Month. In the past years, Karilagán has partnered with the Saint MaryÖs Hall Dance Department in San Antonio and the Edwin Duero Dance Company of the Philippines in sponsoring intensive summer workshops on Philippine dance and music.
These programs culminated in recital performance that were presented to the public. More recently we have participated in San Antonio's Luminaria Arts Festival, performed on local television news programs, and competed in the Sinulog Festival held at Sto. Niño de Cebu Catholic Church in San Antonio. Karilagân will continue to be an organization dedicated to the promotion of Filipino culture through our fundraising, scholarships, and performances.
